How to measure Sofas and Sectionals

Howdy ya'll, I wanted to take some time to talk about how to properly measure sofas and sectionals, including tackling the biggest pickle. Is it left or is it right? In my experience I have learned that majority of people do not measure their space and that can be a huge problem. Trying to eyeball it most definitely does not work and especially if you're buying online without having laid eye on the product, this can result in serious trouble when the sofa arrives and its too big for your space and to make matters worse you're going to still purchase the item because of your kind soul, and the salesman pressure..

I was a carpenter most of my life so technically I measure sofa and sectionals incorrectly, so I will go over both ways with you and you can decide which variation works best for you. Just remember when shopping at TexMex Furniture and Detailing Co, we use the second measuring scale. Every single manufacturer measures like so starting with sofas

The next topic to cover is a fiery debatable one, with pitchforks and all..

Which side is that sectional facing??

When purchasing a sectional, you will hear the phrases left-hand facing and right-hand facing, which can be a bit confusing. You will especially hear this phrase when shopping for sectional sofas with attached chaises. This means that as you are facing the sofa, the arm is on the side mentioned.

Right-Hand Facing (RHF): If you are standing facing the sectional then the chaise is on the right.

Left-Hand Facing (LHF): If you are standing facing the sectional then the chaise is on the left.

The standardized method of measuring sectionals is as follows

But I feel the way I measure them is much easier. I say lets call the long part, the long part and the short part, the short part.

I hope this guide helps on your furniture search, and please, please, please make sure you measure your space. Sofas do not appear at actual size in the photos.
